I launched Microsoft office today, and I was offered a “Copilot” to help me write my document.
I clicked over to Google, and “Gemini” summarized my search results. Every shopping platform I visit has a “Chatbot” in the left hand corner asking, “How may I help you today?”
AI support is popping up everywhere. And we all love a tool that makes menial tasks easier.
The Limitations of AI in Will Creation and Estate Planning
We’d like to be clear: Preparing Wills and Estate Plans do NOT fall under the category of menial tasks. We don’t recommend turning to ChatGPT for legal advice, for the same reason we don’t like online, fill-in-the-blank estate planning tools.
Planning and producing your Will involves asking all the right questions, to get the best answers, for YOUR circumstances and YOUR family.
Experienced, passionate, interested attorneys know what to ask. And if estate law isn’t your area of specialization, the old maxim applies: You don’t know what you don’t know.
Why Estate Planning Requires Human Expertise
It’s important to have a qualified human guide you through estate planning. Here’s why:
- You need us to ask the RIGHT questions.
Every family is different. No AI tool, online form or computer program in existence can capture every nuance and detail to include the intricacies of your relationships, assets, and long-term goals. Only a human can ensure your unique wishes can be carried out smoothly and appropriately for your unique circumstances.
- You need us to ask ALL the questions.
Law is all about attention to detail, and we’ve had clients come to us to fix messes that were caused when something really basic was overlooked. Sometimes, omitting just one word will nullify and invalidate a will, creating the very chaos you were trying diligently to avoid. - You need us to know when we’ve found the right answer.
One shortcoming of AI right now is that it will string together words in meaningful sentences but has no way of evaluating the meaning or truth of those sentences. The same goes for online will and trust services. You need to know enough to recognize whether the output that computer process generates is the right answer.
Personalized Will and Estate Planning for Unique Family Needs
Your family isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your estate plan shouldn’t be either.
You are much more than names on a form, and you deserve much more than computer-generated advice.
We work closely with clients to help them make the best decisions. This includes providing you with the knowledge and understanding you need to weigh the pros and cons of different options.
We know that our process of discovery, choosing and sharing knowledge is even more important than the final “output” – the documented will and estate plan.
What You Deserve: More Than an AI-Generated Template
Your family is unique, and your estate plan should reflect that.
You deserve:
- Personalized guidance.
- Thoughtful conversations.
- An expert who takes the time to understand your unique circumstances.
We believe that discovery, planning, and education are just as important as the final document. That’s why we take the time to understand your values and goals, ensuring your estate plan truly reflects what matters most to you.
